Andy Whitfield's Biography

In July 17, 1971, Andy Whitfield was born in Amlwch, Wales. His parents Robert and Pat Whitfield then moved to Australia in 1999 with his sibling Laura.

Moved to Sydney, Australia after graduating the University of Sheffield, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England for Engineering.

He started acting and modeling while working as an engineer and building inspector for a consulting agency.

In 1999, Andy Whitfield married Terrica Smith-Whitfield and later to Vashti Whitfield. Andy
is father of two wonderful children: Jesse Red Whitfield, born 2005 and Indigo sky Whitfield, born 2007.

He attended Screenwise Film & TV School for Actors, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

He has appeared in several Australian television series, such as Opening Up, All Saints, The Strip, Packed to the Rafters and McLeod's Daughters. He gained his first prominent role in the Australian supernatural film Gabriel.

Still working his day job as an engineer, he sought a part as a Roman gladiator in ‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand’ and landed the lead role.

Whitfield starred in the 2010 television series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, which is filmed in New Zealand. He plays the part of Spartacus, a soldier condemned to fight as a gladiator and who ultimately leads a rebellion against the Romans.

Whitfield also appears in the upcoming Australian thriller The Clinic starring opposite Tabrett Bethell (of Legend of the Seeker fame), set for release in 2010, which was shot in Deniliquin.

In March 2010, Whitfield was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, beginning treatment immediately in New Zealand. This delayed production of season two of Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Whitfield expects to return for a second season.

In June 2010 it was announced that Whitfield completely finished his treatment and was given a clean bill of health. Regretfully he was expected to be back on the set of Spartacus: Blood and Sand by October but a setback caused delay in filming.

September 2010, it was announced that Whitfield's cancer had returned and he would not be returning for the second season.

Approximately a year later on September 11, 2011 and unforgettably and sadly a day that was in tribute around the world for America’s 9/11, our warrior Andy lost his battle with Lymphoma.

"On a beautiful sunny Sydney spring morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18 month battle with lymphoma cancer," Whitfield's wife Vashti said in a statement. "He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have help carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was."

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield," Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht said in a statement Sunday night. "We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in `Spartacus' and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life."

(Even though Andy's has gone from us, remember to continue supplication for Andy and his family.)

Andy Whitfield - Compiled tributes to Andy

Thank you for all the continued prayers for Andy and his family...

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Lord our God, the death of Andy Whitfield recalls our human condition and the brevity of our lives on earth. But for those who believe in Your love, death is not the end, nor does it destroy the bonds that You forge in our lives. We share the faith of Your Son's disciples and the hope of the children of God. Bring the light of Christ's resurrection to this time of testing and pain as we pray for Andy and for those who love him, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

What a hard question. To wake up this morning to such sorrowful news.
I think it would be hard not seeing him in the role he made his own but how can his fans not watch this out of respect for him?
I was so looking forward to this new series and watching him reliving his role of Spartacus. No one will ever portray Spartacus again - like Kirk Douglas was Spartacus so now is Andy Whitfield.
I for one will watch the new series as I`ve waited so long. Although Andy will be absent and will struggle to adjust to the new Spartacus I hope that ALL Andys` fans will watch the series and remember the man who made the series truly GREAT.

I never saw Andy act in any film or tv until I watched him in Spartacus, he was just memorable and outstanding! One line from Spartacus that comes to my mind:
Spartacus: You would kill a fellow Gaul, to save a man you hate?
Crixus: I did not save Spartacus. I saved a brother, who shares the mark. You have earned a glorious death, and shall die at the hands of a gladiator.

I have been crying on and off since hearing the unfortunate news, which is odd for me because I almost never actually cry when an actor dies but this has really hit me hard. I was really pulling for him to get better, I loved him in Spartacus and he had such a presence on film. He will be greatly missed :( I can only imagine what his loved ones must be going through, he was way too young to die. Rest in Peace you cute thing you :(

Of course I will watch the next season. I think it matters how you look at it. I mean look at the legacy that he created with Spartacus. I will watch the next season in his honor, because he planned to see it through till the end. Yeah they could of canceled the show, but he did such an amazing job in the first season it would be wrong to not complete when he and the cast intended. Also makes you think about why they did the 6 episode mini season Gods of the arena. Maybe it was to delay the second season in hopes that he would recover. RIP Andy Whitfield you will be surely missed.

Let his soul his essence his very being continue to live through all of us and let this belief shine upon all of us and comfort us. Know that he is in a better place where he is at true peace. There will be many, many, many more that will need to battle this terrible disease and if they fall short of conquering this terrible disease they will need their spirit to live through us as well. Try to picture a place where Riperton sings angelic music on a majestic field where her voice brings everlasting joy and fulfillment. Picture a place where Ross paints wonderful masterpieces of the godly, peaceful scenery around him. Now imagine a place where our brave warrior gathers among them both and many others and is greeted with the same compassion and gentleness that the brave warrior had always given to all that knew and meet him. Imagine the love that he is feeling. Imagine the warmth that he is feeling. Imagine the smile on his face. Imagine the glow in his eyes. Imagine. Always have people around you that love and care for you all. Peace and love.

How very sad. He had so much talent, and he had a spark. This was his time, and the illness robbed him of it. I'm so very sorry for his wife and children.

So very very sad to hear this news. There was something real in his expression that touched my heart. You see actors every day, but his soul shined thru and his soul was special. Good bye Andy the world was truly cheated of a great gift (gone too early). Many special prayers to his wife and family. Nothing is harder than these moments and I wish for much support for them. All my prayers and blessings are being sent tonight.

Well, what else to say?
Thank you for introducing me to Andy Whitfield. Something in his gaze touched my soul as well as his courage to face life ... and you helped me to know that.

The pictures of the people I love are on my piano and Andy too, because if I did not know him in this life, I should have known him in another. It's my only explanation for the empathy I feel for him. I want to remember him every day.

Carol, you're cool .... just need to speak Portuguese!

Hi! I come from Italy. I discovered this amazing actor/ man only few weeks ago as I started to watch Spartacus so late. There are no words to express the pain that I've heard when I discovered that he was dead so young...it isn't fair! he will always be a gladiator to me! he will be Spartacus forever! I really loved the show but without him it will never be the same. Rest in peace dear Andy! condolences to his family.

I am very sad ...
I discovered this great new actor just now in March 2012 when the broadcasting of Spartacus began
I'm sad because Andy had a fresh, great presence on screen ... its appearance breathes dignity, distinction, and simultaneous tenderness and strength of personality that we have not and unfortunately we'll never have a chance to meet. Life is really unfair. He's just started to rise as an actor, and is deprived, on a professional level, the chance to enjoy his success and on a personal level, also to enjoy his young family ... My heart goes for his wife and children... it is not easy to grow up without one parent... I know from personal experience.... Andy I will never forget you... Rest in peace.

Hi there I'm Copperfaery from Monterrey, Mexico. such a sad loss. still cannot get over how we lost a magnificent man and actor. May his family be blessed and may he be an angel in heaven watching over his children and wife. Love to all and remember that although we could have survived without another angel we now have one more. an angel Called Andy. Just found this site. thanks for creating it. Hugs.
