Andy Whitfield's Biography

In July 17, 1971, Andy Whitfield was born in Amlwch, Wales. His parents Robert and Pat Whitfield then moved to Australia in 1999 with his sibling Laura.

Moved to Sydney, Australia after graduating the University of Sheffield, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England for Engineering.

He started acting and modeling while working as an engineer and building inspector for a consulting agency.

In 1999, Andy Whitfield married Terrica Smith-Whitfield and later to Vashti Whitfield. Andy
is father of two wonderful children: Jesse Red Whitfield, born 2005 and Indigo sky Whitfield, born 2007.

He attended Screenwise Film & TV School for Actors, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

He has appeared in several Australian television series, such as Opening Up, All Saints, The Strip, Packed to the Rafters and McLeod's Daughters. He gained his first prominent role in the Australian supernatural film Gabriel.

Still working his day job as an engineer, he sought a part as a Roman gladiator in ‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand’ and landed the lead role.

Whitfield starred in the 2010 television series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, which is filmed in New Zealand. He plays the part of Spartacus, a soldier condemned to fight as a gladiator and who ultimately leads a rebellion against the Romans.

Whitfield also appears in the upcoming Australian thriller The Clinic starring opposite Tabrett Bethell (of Legend of the Seeker fame), set for release in 2010, which was shot in Deniliquin.

In March 2010, Whitfield was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, beginning treatment immediately in New Zealand. This delayed production of season two of Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Whitfield expects to return for a second season.

In June 2010 it was announced that Whitfield completely finished his treatment and was given a clean bill of health. Regretfully he was expected to be back on the set of Spartacus: Blood and Sand by October but a setback caused delay in filming.

September 2010, it was announced that Whitfield's cancer had returned and he would not be returning for the second season.

Approximately a year later on September 11, 2011 and unforgettably and sadly a day that was in tribute around the world for America’s 9/11, our warrior Andy lost his battle with Lymphoma.

"On a beautiful sunny Sydney spring morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18 month battle with lymphoma cancer," Whitfield's wife Vashti said in a statement. "He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have help carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was."

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield," Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht said in a statement Sunday night. "We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in `Spartacus' and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life."

(Even though Andy's has gone from us, remember to continue supplication for Andy and his family.)

Jaime Murray speaks about Andy Whitfield

Original Article:

“It’s the prequel,” she explains. “It was shot because Andy Whitfield – lovely beautiful Andy – got sick in that first year. We shot the prequel so he could have treatment and recover. Then they were going to go back and shoot the second season. But Andy didn’t get better.”

Whitfield played the title role of Spartacus in the original series, Blood and Sand. He had been diagnosed with cancer while filming the first series. He went into remission while the prequel was in production and plans were under way to welcome him back for year three. But his condition worsened. He died in Australia on September 11 this year.

“While we were shooting there was a feeling of excitement, that Andy was moving forward and that everything was better. It was only after I finished filming the show that we realised there was a problem and that Andy was unwell again,” says Jaime.

His death, at such a young age, she says is “terrifying”.  “He was so right for that role,” she adds. “Because he was beautiful, but there was also a nobility to him.”

A final note from the moderator of “Andy Whitfield’s Unofficial Fan Site”

Hello Fans, Friends and family of Andy,

Well this will likely be my final post for “Andy Whitfield’s Unofficial Fan Site” but I won’t make that a for-sure. If I come across another smiling, determined and spirited image of our boy then, yes, I’m definitely posting as long as God blesses me with the task.

I briefly want to tell how Andy has personally touched my life. There are but a handful of individuals I have never met but have impacted my life in some odd way. Even if Andy is gone from this realm and onto another, to me he will always symbolize courage, honor, integrity and pain—wrapped in portrayed theatrical roles, family and a real life. He’s given me a faith to trust, reverence and never doubt because in the end—no matter who or what we believe in—it will be revealed in that final breathe. Focus on life and what is most important. Live simple, but fun-loving.

He taught me that no matter when our time comes to be received in that greater place--where peace and love has no face but a aura of each soul burning with a brightness that never dies—it will not be feared if our focus is in a greater being---as one takes that step to a much greater plateau, let go with little regret, grace and dignity of who we are whenever called.

God Bless,
Carol Gambill

P.S. Don't worry, I will always re-post tributes left here for Andy of his Tribute Page.

The wife of Spartacus star Andy Whitfield recalls his last words

“The wife of actor Andy Whitfield has recalled the Spartacus star's final words to his kids: "I am going to go to sleep now as my body won't work any more. I am like a butterfly with broken wings."
"(Andy) also made emotional deathbed promise to his young family, telling his children Jesse Red, 6, and Indigo Sky, 4, "I will always be with you and will always be watching over you. I love you."

“Vashti added it is important to always have hope if you have a family member with cancer: "Accept the diagnosis not the prognosis. There are millions of people out there who overcome this. And always try to do normal special things, like seeing a great film and spending time together."

Andy Whitfield is Called a Champion by Lucy Lawless

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield…We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in Spartacus and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life. Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and fans.” Lucy was a co-star and was visibly upset.  The late star was referred to as a gentleman who never said a bad word about anyone. He was also a gifted photographer. The late actor is survived by two children."

Note from Moderator of Andy Whitfield's Unofficial Fan site:

Andy Whitfield, a man who touched many hearts with inspiration of his fight, on and off-screen. His onscreen role as Spartacus gave us a glimpse of who his character may have been. Warrior, man of ethics and morals…a family man. As for off-screen, we held our breath as we waited word about his return to acting, never doubting of that return. Little did we know that Andy had gracefully bowed out with dignity on September 11, 2011 while the world paid tribute to 9-11.

We look to others for strength and inspiration throughout our lives and Andy was our man. When they are gone from us we try to rationalize …understand why. I truly feel that Andy was at peace in his last moments and believe that he had graciously taken what life had given him and used it to the best of his ability. He would want others to live the same—with a hunger and zeal that never dies. Andy will forever stay in each and every heart. Remember to fight for what is right and love those who bless your life. Carry a pride and with valiance that no others can stamp out. Be righteous but forgiving ….be that warrior, no matter what battle is placed front of your path.

Again, I personally thank everyone one for the intercessory prayers that no doubt gave Andy  strength to finally find that peace.

Rest in Peace, my man, and most admired warrior!

The New Guys: The Diverse Next Generation Of Action Stars 27Share

"Put Sam Worthington, Chris Pine, and Andy Whitfield in a line, I’m not sure I could tell them apart."

What are you kidding me! Andy is one in a million. He's a star that's so unique that he has created the Aussie art of acting; totally sexy and desirable to see. He's brought the popularity and interest of the gladiator, the era of roman times popular. More and more movies are trying to equal the quality star of Spartacus; Blood and Sand. Obviously this writer, Natalie, has no idea what she's talking about!

Emmys 2011: Alterna-Emmys Staff Picks

Spartacus show
Spartacus is not the most highbrow show. The first few episodes earned the series a reputation for gratuitous nudity, violence, and sex. But beneath that scandalous outer layer was a clever and emotionally wrenching show that took risks few established series would. The second season managed to continue that trend, despite the loss of charismatic lead actor Andy Whitfield. While the star’s unfortunate cancer diagnosis forced the series to improvise a prequel series, creator Steven S. DeKnight took advantage of the situation to flesh out the characters in new, exciting ways. And boy, when we say “exciting," we mean it. There are no half-measures in classical Rome. -Natalie Silverman

Of Course, Andy, we were behind ya' every step of the way with Sparatacus; and remember we are no different than now! Get strong and let's hear an Urrgh!

New ‘Spartacus: Vengeance’ Trailer Is Released

Spartacus returns to STARZ in January 2012 and I'm sure that Andy wishes the best for them with the upcoming season--so in light of that--I'm posting the trailer release for "Spartacus: Vengeance".

Like an individual had commented, below the flickcast link and I would have to agree..."Liam McIntyre looks good as "Spartacus" but will miss Andy Whitfield" doubt. No one will ever be able to replace the roll of Spartacus. Our boy, Andy, managed to inherently assimilate a character of heart and soul with such a refined finesse that it appeared all too natural. One could view his roll as a breathtaking piece of artwork--the pièce de résistance, magnifico!

Okay, maybe I'm getting a bit carried away, but what the heck....Here's the trailer below for "Spartacus: Vengenance". Happy viewing and have a blessed day with loved ones filling in your thoughts, and of course, prayers for Andy and his as well.

Spartacus Roll Call: Andy Whitfield "Doing Very Well," Liam McIntyre Embraced

Andy Whitfield may not have attended the Spartacus: Vengeance panel at Comic-Con on Friday, but his presence was still felt by fans and former castmates who missed his performance as the iconic slave on the first season of the Starz sword-and-sandal drama. The actor had dropped out of the series to battle non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

"He's doing very well, for what I hear," executive producer Steven S. DeKnight told the audience. "Obviously he's very private about his health, so I can't go into details. We have joked with each other about working together again. ... He'd respond, something where he doesn't have to take his clothes off."

Hollywood Exclusive by Marilyn Beck & Stacy Jenel Smith

Below taken from original link:

DEAR STACY: How is Andy Whitfield? — Jordan B., Newark, N.J.

DEAR JORDAN: The "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" actor, who had to drop out of the Starz series permanently in September to fight a recurrence of his Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, has been keeping a low profile. However, series creator Steven S. DeKnight told a group at an Emmy consideration screening put on by The Wrap in June that he and Whitfield have been talking about collaborating on another project. Said DeKnight: "I have the utmost faith that Andy and I will work together again." We certainly hope they can.

Quotes to Note

Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king."
— J.R.R. Tolkien (The Fellowship of the Ring)

"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."
— John Lennon

"I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best."

Our letter to Andy

Our letter to Andy,

What I'm posting comes from the heart and I'm sure many others feel the same way, so I will refer to me as we.

Lately, there hasn't been much word on how you're doing but we respect your privacy and the respite with which you are taking and experiencing anew.

Our thoughts are with you in your daily journey. Take time to enjoy the smaller things in life that usually are overlooked and most times become the most important and precious to us. We pray that you keep up that great spirit of yours; for it is in our fight that we all become stronger, wiser and more resilient in order to triumph over adversity. Remember to take each day in easy pleasure and contentment. Again, know that our prayers and wishes go out to you and your family. And please, find comfort, love and happiness in all you do.

Lastly, we thank you for your inspiration given to us on-screen but more so off-screen.

God Bless you and your family!

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena –the verdict on the finale by Phelim O'Neil

This article gives overview after Andy's time off. I hope the show is doing well since Andy's portrayal of Spartacus made it what it is today. Some might disagree. I personally can't watch the show without Andy. I might sound like a prude or someone that is standing loyal by Andy's side...well, I just might be. I posted this article link for those who are interested in a writer's point of view in how the new episodes ranked.

There is another story about one of the cast, Manu Bennett, that tells of their personal battles before filming Spartacus; Blood and Sand. I thought it heartfelt, sincere and very inspirational.

Stay strong Andy's and keep that fighting spirit. Again, we're rooting for you!

"I never thought I would be glad to have received a diagnosis of lung cancer. But if I hadn’t, I probably would have never learned that we don’t need to get cancer or any of the other diseases known to man, including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and arthritis.

Dr. Lorraine Day, a medical doctor had an advanced case of breast cancer and refused chemo-therapy or radiation, and God showed her His method of healing naturally and keeping the body from contracting any other diseases. I have her DVD titled “You Can’t Improve On God,” and it is a real eye opener. If you would like to order a copy, call 1-800- 574-2437. It sells for $19.95 plus $7.50 for S & H. Check out the attachment. I am confident that the Lord is healing me, and I am following His plan to restore my immune system by eating and drinking properly according to the information I received from Dr. Days DVD. If you know of anyone that may benefit from this information, please pass it on."
